The purpose of this research was to investigate the trends in people moving out of supported accommodation and the barriers they face when looking to move on.
For young people facing life on the street or spent moving from sofa to sofa, a place in supported accommodation is a valuable lifeline and chance to get themselves back on track, however for many, this move can end in frustration as growing housing pressures leave them trapped and unable to return to independent living.
‘Delayed until further notice’ is a new research report produced by YMCA England, calling for the Government to take action the problems which are leaving thousands of people with nowhere to go when they are ready to leave supported accommodation.
The research found that over 4 in 5 (81%) of supported accommodation residents surveyed confessed to worrying about being able to find somewhere to live when they are ready to move on. With over half (56%) of residents feeling ready to move on but unable to do so, and one in five (20%) left waiting for over six months.
To address this situation where thousands are being ‘delayed until further notice’, YMCA are proposing that the Government should sign up to the following five point plan that would not only help address the situation for those living in supported accommodation, but would help many more who are struggling day-to-day to find housing in England: –
1. Maintain a housing safety net within the social security system
2. Increase the supply of low-cost housing
3. Create a national ‘help to rent’ scheme
4. Drive up standards and practices in the private rented sector
5. Extend transitional support for those leaving supported accommodation
