“YMCA wholeheartedly supports the banning of dangerous knives as a way to address immediate safety concerns. However, this in isolation is not enough. Alongside the ban, we strongly emphasise the power of prevention, and feel a comprehensive solution can be achieved by investing in youth services.

“For years, alongside the sector, YMCA has been at the forefront of advocating for investment in youth services, an area that has suffered staggering cuts of 73%, the equivalent of more than £1 billion, since 2010.

“Investment in a ‘Youth hub’ offer for young people will go a long way to ensure that they have access to those trusted adults and safe spaces to help them make positive decisions and offer support when they need it most.

“As the oldest and largest youth charity we know the impact youth services have on young people, and our manifesto recommendations for the next government are a clear and urgent call to action. We cannot overemphasise the critical importance of supporting youth services in creating a safer and more nurturing environment for our young people. Policymakers must take note and act decisively to ensure they receive the support they need to thrive in their communities.”
