“YMCA welcomes the focus within today’s King’s Speech on improving opportunities for young people, particularly through commitments to social housing, apprenticeships, vocational education and supporting young people into work.
“As a charity movement supporting young people, we see first-hand the impact housing insecurity, the rising cost of living and limited opportunities can have on young people’s futures.
“We are encouraged by the proposed Social Housing Renewal Bill and the recognition that housing can be a source of insecurity for many people. Increased investment in genuinely affordable and social housing is essential if young people are to live independently and build stable futures. We encourage the Government to move at pace to bring in measures that support young people to thrive and allow organisations like YMCA to scale up their housing offer and deliver what is needed.
“We also welcome commitments to strengthen education, apprenticeships and support for young people and for those with special educational needs and disabilities, helping create pathways into meaningful employment and opportunity for all.
“However, while many of the measures announced today will impact young people’s lives, it is disappointing that there was no direct commitment to youth services or long-term youth work funding. Trusted youth services and early intervention support play a vital role in helping young people belong, contribute and thrive.
“At YMCA, we look forward to working constructively with Government and partners across the sector to ensure these commitments deliver meaningful change for young people and communities across England and Wales.”
