Central YMCA Y’s Girls project celebrate appointing first Youth Impact Ambassador.

K is on a journey through the Youth Impact Ambassador programme (YIA), which is unique to Central YMCA and provides an exciting opportunity to build leadership skills and gain experience among peers.

It also helps promote Y’s Girls’ impact and help more young people understand the mentoring journey and the many opportunities that can be gained. The YIA is a small research project for Y’s Girls, part of Y Mentoring, which improves accessibility and inclusivity through a creative exploration of identity and belonging.

During the October half-term, the mentoring programme held an event at Tottenham Court Road, which celebrated the project by appointing its first Youth Impact Ambassador.

The morning focused on identity, exploring how we see ourselves and what is important to us. Various workshops, including visual storytelling, collages, and mask making, were used. The work was then used to develop a poem, which was recorded to include all the mentors’ and mentees’ thoughts.

K beautifully led the group through an activity called Life-mapping.

She explained the activity and even prepared a map of her own to share with the group, which she had previously made with her mentor.

As Youth Impact Ambassador, K was on hand to answer questions and encourage others.

“This is my life map. It has my family, my sister, and my hair. This is just a practice sheet—do yours however you want to—be creative.”

The afternoon was filled with games, Christmas card making, and decoration craft activities.

A massive well done to K and everyone taking part in the Youth Impact Programme!

Well done, thank you also to all the mentors involved who helped empower these young women, and a special thanks to Allison Bishop, the Y’s Girls project coordinator, for facilitating the event.
