Face-to face-fundraising

What is face-to-face fundraising?

Face-to-face fundraising is one of the most cost-effective ways of recruiting regular donors and raising awareness of YMCA’s work. The money raised helps thousands of young people via the RoomSponsor programme, and contributes to YMCA being the largest voluntary provider of supported housing across England and Wales.

YMCA partners with professional fundraising agencies to help coordinate and deliver face-to-face fundraising campaigns. Every fundraiser receives thorough training before they begin, ensuring they understand YMCA’s mission and are fully compliant with fundraising standards.

If you want to know more about these fundraising techniques, please read through the FAQs below.

Our fundraisers only work in areas where the site owner or manager has given advance, written permission.

Yes, the Fundraising Regulator is the regulatory body for fundraising in the UK. YMCA and our third-party agencies are registered with the Fundraising Regulator and comply with all aspects of the Code of Fundraising Practice.

Yes. We have a Fundraising Statement (relating to the safeguarding of vulnerable people) which ensures we treat everyone appropriately, respectively and fairly, and remain alert to any particular vulnerabilities or needs an individual might have.

Yes. All of our fundraisers are professionally trained throughout the year to ensure they are fully informed so they can confidently represent YMCA and are compliant with the Fundraising Regulator’s Code of Practice.

We are constantly monitoring our fundraiser’s behavior and performance, and use third party auditors to evaluate and report on their performance.

On the rare occasion we receive a complaint, we take this very seriously. All complaints are reported internally and to our agency partners. We ensure swift and proportionate action is taken to prevent any further issues.

A fundraiser will check a new supporter’s date of birth as it is illegal to ask someone to make a financial commitment if they are under the age of 18.

We warmly welcome support of all ages and if anyone is unable to complete a sign up with a fundraiser they can make a gift online.

We ask people for their card details to set up a monthly recurring card donation or Direct Debit to support our work.

Our fundraisers use a tablet device to complete an electronic sign-up form. The device makes sure people’s details are kept secure through encryption.

To find out more about how we use supporter data, read our privacy policy.

After a supporter signs up for a monthly recurring donation with one of our fundraisers, our call team will attempt to reach them by phone.

These calls are an opportunity to:

  • Express our sincere thanks for their generosity
  • Confirm that we have the correct details
  • Gather feedback about their experience with our fundraisers.

If we’re unable to make contact, a monthly donation will still proceed as scheduled. Full details of the contribution and how it supports our work will be included in a welcome pack.

Our street fundraisers are not permitted to ask for or accept cash donations. They are only authorised to request support through Direct Debits or Recurring Card Payments. These methods are the most efficient ways to give, helping us lower administrative costs and providing a consistent, reliable source of income. This steady support allows us to plan long-term projects and offer long-term support to young people.

If a fundraiser has asked you for cash, they may not be legitimate. Please report this to our Supporter Experience Team by calling 020 7186 9518 or emailing supporter.experience@ymca.org.uk
