Government’s Commitment to National Youth Strategy: A Major Step Forward for Young People

Government’s Commitment to National Youth Strategy: A Major Step Forward for Young People

We are delighted that the Secretary of State set out a commitment yesterday to developing a co-produced national youth strategy, which the youth sector has long campaigned for. This marks a significant step forward in creating a more equitable future for young people and the start of a positive relationship with the new Government.

The Culture Secretary acknowledged YMCA findings that there has been a devastating 73% cut to youth funding since 2010 and that a new approach is needed to put young people at the heart of the policy agenda and to deliver vital opportunities for the next generation.

YMCA has long advocated for the prioritisation of youth services in national policy, and we are delighted to see the government taking decisive action. For years, we have called for a comprehensive and long-term vision for youth services—one that ensures every young person, no matter where they live, has access to consistent support and opportunities throughout the year.

“Young people deserve consistent life chances and opportunities, no matter where they live. This commitment to a national strategy is a vital step in ensuring every young person has access to the services they need to thrive. We look forward to working alongside the government to make this vision to enhance youth work a reality,” said Denise Hatton, Chief Executive of YMCA England & Wales.

At YMCA, we believe in the potential of every young person. Youth services are not a luxury; they are essential to the development of healthy, thriving communities. We stand ready to work with the government and other partners to co-create a generation of youth services that meets the needs of young people today and prepares them for their potential of tomorrow.
