Statement from YMCA England & Wales on Homeless Death Figures

We are deeply saddened by the record number of people (1,611) who lost their lives while experiencing homelessness last year. Behind every number is a person — someone’s child, friend, or loved one — and these latest figures serve as a stark reminder that, as a society, we must do more to prevent homelessness and ensure no one is left without the safety, dignity, and opportunity that a stable home provides.

At YMCA, we see first-hand the complex needs and realities faced by people on the edge of homelessness — from trauma and mental health challenges to addiction and poverty. Every day, YMCAs provide more than 10,000 beds and personalised support to help people rebuild their lives. Whether through life skills, employment training, or mental health support, we work to help people move from crisis to independence and ensure young people have the best possible start in life.

These heartbreaking statistics strengthen our resolve to continue working with government and partners across England and Wales to deliver long-term, joined-up solutions that break the cycle of homelessness for good. Everyone deserves a safe place to call home and the opportunity to thrive.
