Denise Hatton, Chief Executive, YMCA England & Wales said:
“YMCA welcomes the long-overdue decision to repeal the Vagrancy Act – a vital step forward in ending the criminalisation of rough sleeping and homelessness. We have campaigned for this change alongside many others in the homelessness sector for too long.
“This is, however, just one step. Ending homelessness requires more than repealing outdated laws. It demands urgent and coordinated action to prevent homelessness before it begins – particularly for young people.
“We now urge the Government to follow through with a bold and fully-funded cross-departmental homelessness strategy, one that recognises and tackles youth homelessness as a priority. Too many young people are trapped in cycles of repeat homelessness. Prevention and early intervention are key to breaking this cycle and ensuring every young person has access to a safe home, support, and opportunities they deserve.
“YMCA remains committed to working with our sector partners, government, and the communities we serve to build a future in which no young person is criminalised for their circumstances and where they have the foundations needed not only to survive but to thrive.”
