YMCA Statement in Response to Voting Age Being Lowered to 16

Denise Hatton, Chief Executive, YMCA England & Wales, said:

“YMCA warmly welcomes the Government’s decision to lower the voting age from 18 to 16 – a historic and positive move that recognises the voices, rights and responsibilities of young people.

“This is something YMCA, alongside many youth organisations, has long campaigned for. We believe young people should have a say in the decisions that affect their lives, communities and futures. Whether it’s education, housing, employment or mental health support, 16- and 17-year-olds are already deeply impacted by political choices – and they deserve a seat at the table.

“This change sends a powerful message: that young people are trusted, valued citizens with the ability to shape society for the better. We know from our work across communities that when young people are engaged and empowered, they step up – as volunteers, campaigners, leaders and changemakers.

“Lowering the voting age is a welcome step forward for democracy. Now, we must ensure that all young people have access to the education, resources and support they need to participate fully and confidently in civic life.”
