Denise Hatton, Chief Executive, YMCA England & Wales, said:
“Today’s announcement of an £88 million investment in youth services marks a welcome step forward for young people across the country. For over a decade, YMCA and the sector have campaigned tirelessly to reverse the deep and damaging decline in youth service funding, which has fallen by more than £1 billion since 2010/11.
“We are pleased to see the Government recognising the vital role that youth services play in helping young people to thrive – not just academically, but socially, emotionally and within their communities. From mental health and employability to life skills and a safe place to belong, these services are not a luxury – they are a lifeline.
“This renewed commitment is a clear signal that the voices of young people – and those who support them – are finally being heard. But to truly rebuild what has been lost, this investment must be the beginning of a long-term, cross-government approach to youth policy.
“We look forward to engaging further with the upcoming National Youth Strategy and continuing to work in partnership with Government and sector leaders to ensure this support reaches the young people who need it most, in every corner of the country, and create a stronger, more resilient youth offer for generations to come.”
